Fishermen mend their nets as Provincetown’s “Front Street” beckons beyond. Most businesses
faced the water at this time and were accessed by people who walked the beach as their main
avenue or arrived by boat to conduct commerce. As one woman of the time noted, it was much
more efficient arriving by boat as “an excursion overland from Wellfleet was an overnight trip.”
