The ships on the horizon were part of a fleet of 200 schooners known as the Grand Bankers,
named for the fishing grounds in which they worked. The Grand Bankers were a competitive
lot who enjoyed racing against one another to reach their destination. Out of this came the
famed Lipton Cup, offered by Irish sports enthusiast Sir Thomas Lipton for a 42-mile Fishermen’s Race
in Massachusetts Bay. The "Rose Dorothea" swept to victory in the race on August 1, 1907 and brought
the cup back to Provincetown with great fanfare, a broom tied to her mast to indicate a "clean sweep."
