ong Point Studio was born in 2003 when we conceptualized and
redesigned the Provincetown Gallery Guide brochure into a full-color,
32-page booklet. The following year, we launched our own labor of love,
the Provincetown Art Guide, a comprehensive index expanded beyond
galleries to include artists, artisans, museums, cultural events and fine
dining. This year we’re delighted to be celebrating our fifth anniversary!
Toward that end, we’ve put together a very special edition that pays tribute
to some of the many artist families who have called Provincetown home for
generations. Artists like Ferol Sibley Warthen, who began summering in
Provincetown in 1950 and was among the second generation of artists to
work in a unique printmaking method that originated in Provincetown. Years
later, her granddaughter Kathi Smith lives here and continues to carry on the
“whiteline” tradition. We feature the Malicoat family, descendants of noted
painter Philip Malicoat whose successors include a talented coterie of artists,
sculptors, writers and musicians; abstract expressionist Robert Motherwell and
his artist daughter Jeannie; and the Packard family, talented granddaughter
and great granddaughters of our renowned cover artist, Max Bohm. These
artists settled in Provincetown, drawing inspiration from its strong yet vulnerable
psyche, its luminous yet fragile body. As important as those featured
here are, equally notable are those missing from our pages. There are many
more talented artist families who call Provincetown home. This year, we
mourn the loss of three members from this group—Tony Vevers, Carol
Whorf Westcott and Norman Mailer.
I’d like to publicly thank all who expressed support and encouragement for
our continued endeavors. Our mission has never wavered: To present Provincetown
as the artistically inspiring, unique, beautiful, culturally rich, accepting
and diverse place that it truly is!
As we celebrate our fifth
anniversary, we look forward to
hearing from you and serving
your needs for years to come!
